How to Add Your University Email to the Gmail App

Follow this step-by-step guide to check your @uom.lk emails directly inside the Gmail app on your mobile phone.

⚠️ Important Connection Note:
This mail setup will NOT work if:
  • Your phone is connected to any VPN (turn it off first).
  • You are using Data Saving apps (or browser data savers/cloud compression tools).
  • You are currently roaming in another country outside Sri Lanka.
⚠️ Most Common Mistake:
Whenever the app asks for your Username, type ONLY your username, NOT your full email.
✅ Correct: kasunp
❌ Wrong: kasunp@uom.lk

Instructions for Android Phones

  1. Open the Gmail app on your phone.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initials circle in the top right corner.
  3. Scroll down and tap Add another account.
  4. On the next screen, tap Other.
  5. Type your full university email (e.g., yourname@uom.lk), then tap Manual setup at the bottom.
  6. Choose Personal (IMAP) and type your university email password.
  7. Now fill in the Incoming server settings exactly like this:
    • Username: Type only your username (delete the @uom.lk part).
    • Password: Your university password.
    • Server: Change this to mail.uom.lk
    • Port: Change to 993
    • Security type: Choose SSL/TLS
    Tap Next.
  8. Next, fill in the Outgoing server settings:
    • Make sure Require sign-in is turned ON (switch is blue/checked).
    • Username: Type only your username (no @uom.lk).
    • Password: Your university password.
    • SMTP server: Type submit.uom.lk
    • Port: Change to 587
    • Security type: Choose STARTTLS
    Tap Next.
  9. Tap Next through the final screens, type your name, and you are done!

Instructions for iPhones & iPads (iOS)

  1. Open the Gmail app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your profile picture circle in the top right corner.
  3. Tap Add another account.
  4. Select Other (IMAP) from the list.
  5. Fill in the top details and the Incoming Mail Server section:
    • Email: Your full email address (e.g., yourname@uom.lk)
    • Name: Your actual name (e.g., Jane Doe)
    • IMAP Host Name: mail.uom.lk
    • Username: Your username only (delete the @uom.lk part)
    • Password: Your university password
    • Port: 993
    • Security: Choose SSL or SSL/TLS
  6. Scroll down to the Outgoing Mail Server section and fill in:
    • SMTP Host Name: submit.uom.lk
    • Username: Your username only (no @uom.lk)
    • Password: Your university password
    • Port: 587
    • Security: Choose STARTTLS
  7. Tap Next (or Start Sign-in) in the top right to finish.

Still having trouble? Check these things:

  • VPN / Data Saver: Make sure you are completely disconnected from any VPN or mobile data saving app.
  • Roaming: Access will not connect if you are on international roaming outside the country.
  • Username Mistake: Did you accidentally type @uom.lk in the Username box? Delete it so only your username remains.
  • Sending Failed: If you can receive but not send, verify that the outgoing server is submit.uom.lk and port is 587.
  • Password: Double-check for typos or accidental caps lock.
